Right, so I’ve secured my domain, but it’s clogged with ads for someone else’s company. I can’t sleep properly knowing that my turf is being usurped like this, so the time has come to make it redirect to this blog, until I figure out how to make beautiful, beautiful websites.

I went to the website domains-24.com, but it’s hopelessly Spartan and all very obscure. I tried some internet searches (“how do you make your domain redirect” etc.) but all the answers where absolute gobbledygook about access PHP DNS servers root directories and the devil knows what else. Obviously, I’ve already hit a wall.

At a loss, I emailed the peeps from domains-24, thus wise:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I just registered my domain name inkflower.com at your website, domains-24.com. However, when I visit the site, it is occupied by several advertisements. I wanted to know how I could make my domain redirect to another site.
Thank you very much for your help,
      James.

Allright, while I wait, I’m going to try more stuff. I tried to make it so that emails sent to james@inkflower.com are forwarded to me, but it doesn’t seem to have worked.

Screw it, I’m giving up for tonight. I’ll ask someone who knows and do it tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s a robot I drew on a napkin at dinner:

Napkin Robot 01

I love to draw during dinnertime, and absorbent napkins are just the best when combined with pilot V5 rollerballs :D

Alright, I’ve decided to make a website. The first step is to secure a domain name – even I know that.

I searched for “domain names” on g***le, and the first hit was a website called domains24.com. That’ll do.

I went on the site, and after some fooling about managed to buy the domain name:

Inkflower.com

Wicked! I’m surprised it wasn’t taken, so I feel we’re off to a good start. Apparently I’ve only bought it for one year. Science knows what’ll happen this time next year, but it’s a bridge I’ll cross when I get there.

Right now, if I go to inkflower.com, it’s full of weird advertisements from a site called explore-24; I didn’t put them there, and I don’t want them there either. Also, I’m not looking for adult friends in my local area. Cheers for the offer though.

Join me next time, when I’ll try to make inkflower.com redirect to this blog here, as a temporary measure =), and also buy some of that “server space” I keep hearing all the cool kids talk about.

Peace,

Hi everyone! My name’s James, I’m a pen-and-ink illustrator, I’m terrible with computers, and I want to make a website.

It seems that everyone and their dog can slap up a website in no time at all, and I’ve been repeatedly told that it’s incredibly easy. But here I am – I’ve wanted to set up a website for years now, I’ve got all these great ideas… but nothing. I can’t seem to do it.

Well, that ends today. I’m setting up my site. And this blog is about how I do it.

I’m going to write down every single step I take. I hope that people can learn from my mistakes, get a laugh from my appalling ignorance, and maybe, just maybe, give me a nudge in the right direction.

I can’t be the only one in this situation. I want this blog to be a thorough, no-holds-barred record of one man’s battle against his techno-ignorance.

I’ll try and keep the blog headings concise, so that in the future (once my magnificent website is up and I’m on the forbes 500 list) anyone who wants can easily search individual parts of it.

Wish me luck. I’m going to build a Site from Scratch.
